Our coalition is now one year old. Here is a look back and a look ahead to our 2022 plans.
Hello all!
As 2022 gets moving for the GR Climate Coalition, we are excited to do a quick review of 2021 and share some plans for 2022.
After establishing the Coalition in February 2021, we eventually built membership to more than 60 groups. We advocated for a city-wide commitment to carbon neutrality which helped push the City Commission to reaffirm a municipal goal and commit to creating a climate justice lens in the Master Plan. We have worked hard to build relationships with the City and other groups doing climate work and held our first Climate March. We couldn’t have done it without you!
While many things may change, our mission remains the same: “Our goal is for Grand Rapids to achieve community-wide carbon neutrality by 2030, prioritizing equity and climate justice.”
After discussions on the greatest need and best opportunities for making an impact in 2022, we’ve built a strategy framework, re-affirming our values and commitments. We identified our interest in working on:
Transportation
Housing – energy efficiency for families
Food & farming – healthy and equitable
Public health – water, air and access to care
Renewable energy & electrification
Waste
Stay tuned for ways you can plug in through:
Direct engagement, and action
Movement building in West Michigan
Policy advocacy
As always, please reach out with your questions and ideas. We are stronger together and more effective because of you!
In solidarity,
Janet & Abigail, Co-chairs
